Friday Happies

1. This morning, after dropping the kids at school, I went for a walk. Twice this week I ran past the same bramble bushes and wanted to pick some fruit before the season finished. It's a pretty walk, even on the most grey and damp of mornings, and I spent a peaceful hour enjoying the solitude.

2. My bounty: 3 pounds of fruit, ready to be turned into jelly and crumbles over the weekend.

3. New earrings (from etsy) to go with a new little black dress which has a copper zip down the back and, more excitingly, the opportunity to wear both tomorrow night when we go out into town for a friend's birthday drinks.

4. I don't know if it's because the nights are drawing in, but this week I've really enjoyed going up to bed early with some herbal tea and a book. I make myself a little nest in bed, with lots of cushions and pillows, and settle in for a good hour of reading. Crime fiction is often my preferred genre when it's dark outside, and I'm currently enjoying this and can highly recommend the whole series of books.

So, some quiet happy things to end a quiet, busy week. We've all been fighting off various germs lately, trying to keep coughs, colds and viruses at bay with mixed success. It's the time of year, of course. It's been damp and mild here, sometimes humid, which kind of annoys me - I wish it would just cool down more now so that it feels properly like autumn. Cold, crisp and sunny, that's what I'd like please. I've got new woolens to wear!

I really look forward to your Friday Happies and these reflect my own ideas of 'happies' with the exception of going out for drinks in the evening, as I prefer going out for lunch or afternoon tea. Love the copper earrings although I've never had my ears pierced as I can't bear to see a hole through an ear and hate all body piercings and as for tattoos ... they look as if someone has scribbled on the skin. OK, some designs are very intricate but nothing is more beautiful than plain, unblemished skin, surely? If I scribbled all over my body with a ball point pen they'd send for the men in white coats, but it seems acceptable if the self-same skin is pierced with a needle and dyes inserted in order to make a colourful design. I must cease my little rant! Love the mug, by the way (and I must try the Donna Leon books again - I started the first one, which is often not the best, but just didn't get through it.)

Love an early night with a cuppa and a book. I'm currently going through Agatha Christy alternating with Lee Child's 'Jack Reacher' series...
Great pictures too x

I think I've actually read just about all of Donna Leon's books, but have just started to re-read the whole series, in order this time: lovely! (especially whilst trying to get rid of my jet-lag!) :-)

The same damp, humid weather here at the moment - maybe a little more sunnier than at your place, looking at that first photo (which is beautiful, btw !). I long for colder weather, if only to have less mosquitos and flies.... (Believe it or not, I'm talking about Belgium, and not some tropical country !)

Oh I'm with you and just wish it would get a little chillier -I want to wear my scarfe and woolly tights!

Fabulous blackberry haul there, you've inspired me to make a crumble this weekend. Enjoy getting dressed up for your night out tomorrow. Sounds lots of fun and those earrings are very pretty. Have a great time x

Ah yes, a nice bit of crime fiction on a dark evening, perfect. The blackberries have been wonderful this year haven't they. I do hope you have a lovely evening out tomorrow, the earrings are fab. Enjoy the weekend Gillian. CJ xx

Don't ya just love that we can forage for berries and conjure wonderful crumbles and jams, and yet don fabulous frocks and jewellery and toast the night away! Wonderfully diverse list, my dear, enjoy your weekend! (As the lyrics to 'I'm Every Woman' ring in my ears...) Chrissie x

I love a nice bit of crime fiction too, but have never tried any Donna Leon. Thanks for the tip; it's always nice to have a new author to hunt for in the library. Love the look of your bedtime nest and those earrings are beautiful. Enjoy your night out. x

The blackberries are just too irresistible. I've had to be very disciplined this year as I always end up picking far too many and fill the freezer with them. The earrings are lovely and your dress sounds gorgeous too - enjoy your night out. x

I love crime fiction and I'm just starting the Shetland series (enjoyed it on telli). I'm going to try The Quince Trees blackberry crumble muffins with mine! I'm currently enjoying being in my little nest in bed on a Saturday morning with a cup of tea and some blog reading which is what I like to do every weekend! Xx

The blackberries have been so plentiful this year and they do make a deliciously fruity crumble. Bought my first Donna Leon the other day and it will be a future book at bedtime. For some reason, though, I just can't drink in bed. Love those earrings!

Hope you had a fab night out. We've been fighting off the germs too...must be mixing with lots and lots of people in school! I love crime fiction (just finished the latest in the Shetland series) and must try some Donna Leon. Lovely happies Gillian.

Hope you have a great time cooking those blackberries this weekend. We also love a fruity crumble especially on grey and wet days like today. I also like crime fiction. Have you tried A.Indridason's books? Enjoy your evening out! x

I too like to hunker down in a nest with some good reading and nowhere to go. The odd night out is always fun (and I hope yours was!) but it's just so nice to bed down, isn't it?
I'm thinking of trying a recipe which has elderberries in it. Apparently it's pretty reliable for keeping coughs, colds etc. at bay so I'll be heading out with some scissors as soon as the rain stops!

Oh the berries look wonderful. We had some yummy black raspberry and chocolate chip pancakes this morning - a little bit healthy and a little bit sweet. The weather is definitely turning Fall like around here and I am loving it!

Great happies, lovely earrings, delicious fruit. The weather is being strange, yesterday it was so warm yet so dull here.

The weather has been ridiculous given the date, hasn't it, although a few degrees cooler in the Welsh Mountains than at sea level thank goodness. Gorgeous earrings!

Lovely mug to enjoy your tea from.
Hope all the goodness from those berries help to keep the germs at bay and you are all cold free soon.
